Nanny Cam

You are here

There are 3 types of nanny cams. The use or a particular situation that you are in determines the type of nanny cam that you choose.

Wired Nanny Cam
This type of nanny cam does not refer to the power cable but where the video is viewed. A wired nanny cam can be placed in an ordinary looking object like an air purifier, clock radio etc. but connected to another device with wires. For example, a wired nanny cam will usually send the video to a TV, DVR unit or VCR.

Wireless Nanny Cam
A wireless nanny cam still has a wire to get the power to the nanny camera. The battery-powered ones have a limited recording time and this is a major drawback.
With a wireless nanny cam, your recording can be streamed in different places such as a DVR unit but the device has to be placed 500 feet of the camera. With this option, you can stream your video on your PC or over an internet connection for remote viewing.

Self-Recording Nanny Cam
With a self-recording nanny cam, the video file is not transmitted, it is recorded internally in a hard drive or memory card. This type of nanny cam is easy to use as it does not have any cables anywhere; it also does not need connecting to a PC or a router. Setting up the nanny cam for use and viewing is easy.

Features of a Nanny Cam

Real-Time Monitoring
There are Wi-Fi enabled nanny cams that have real-time monitoring but you need an internet connection at both ends i.e. in your home and on your device. If you don’t have access to the internet, you can buy a self-recording nanny cam.

Storage to your PC
A nanny cam can be directly connected to a PC or external hard drive. However, you will lose all your recordings if the external drive or PC crashes or stolen.

SD Card
Most nanny cams store the footage in an SD card. The issue is, SD cards tend to fill up fast but this depends on the size of the card.

A nanny cam with Wi-Fi sends the video footage to the cloud where it can be accessed over the internet. Cloud storage can be free, free with limited storage or a paid service.

Battery Powered
The battery-powered nanny cams run for about 3-5 hours, some get to 10 but you have to part with big money for the ones lasting 20 hours.

For battery-powered nanny cams, the camera is in standby mode and this saves power and only commences to record when motion is detected.

Hidden or Obvious Surveillance
There are covert nanny cams that are expensive and in most areas, you need permission to use them.

Two Way Communication and Wide Angle Viewing
With two way communication, you can communicate with the person(s) at home. A wide-angled nanny cam allows you to see all areas of the room, a nanny cam with pan and tilt is the best one for this function.

Other functions include
Temperature sensor – notifications are sent via SMS or email.

Audio – recording with audio is an added advantage but there are laws that touch on recording people without their consent.

Sound and motion sensors – the nanny cam starts recording if it detects sound or motion.
